How to Install Composite Decking (Without Mistakes)

How to Install Composite Decking (Without Mistakes)

If you found this video helpful, please subscribe. Hope you enjoy. Cheers! How do you install composite decking properly so it lasts and doesn’t fail over time? In this short, I walk you through how to install composite deck boards using a hidden fastener system and share a few key tips to avoid common mistakes. Composite decking is made from a mix of wood fiber and plastic, which makes it strong and low maintenance—but only if it’s installed correctly. Most boards are designed with grooves for hidden fasteners, which means no screws through the surface and a much cleaner finish. When I start an install, especially up against the house, I always snap a chalk line first to make sure everything is straight. From there, I use the proper hardware—usually stainless steel screws with a T15 bit—and a clip system that fastens into the joist and locks into the groove of the board. What I’m doing in this video: • Installing composite deck boards with hidden fasteners • Setting up the first row with a chalk line • Using clips to maintain consistent spacing • Compressing boards with a straightener for tight joints • Driving screws properly to avoid damaging clips Key installation tips: • Don’t overpower your drill—lower the clutch setting • Use a slow trigger when fastening into plastic clips • Don’t drive screws too deep or you’ll crack the clip • Set multiple rows before fastening to keep spacing consistent FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA INSTAGRAM👉🏼 https://www.instagram.com/homerenovisiondiy/ FACEBOOK👉🏼 https://www.facebook.com/homerenovisiondiy/ TIKTOK👉🏼 https://www.tiktok.com/@homerenovisiondiy Disclaimer: Videos produced by Home RenoVision DIY are provided for informational and entertainment purposes only. This Old House | Making the Most of Green Products (S32 E12) | FULL EPISODE

On-site at the Auburndale project, the transformation of the back of the house is almost complete. Up on the deck, general contractor Tom Silva is putting down a new generation of composite decking—it is made from the same recycled plastic bits and wood waste we've used before, but this time it has a durable, proprietary finish that carries a 30-year warranty. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. The manufacturer also provides a hidden fastening system and a prefabricated railing. Inside, painting is underway, and we're using a product that promises richer colors and low VOCs—so master carpenter Norm Abram heads over to the factory to learn what goes into a quality can of paint. Painting contractor Mauro Henrique shows host Kevin O'Connor what he likes and doesn't like about the paint's performance. In the living room, Tom shows Kevin how he's making a few simple modifications to the fireplace mantel to update its style and better fit in with the rest of the newly renovated house. High School for the Trades | This Old House

High School for the Trades | This Old House

We often talk about the skilled trade gap and how fewer young people are being exposed to the trades. The BOCES Career and Technical Training program in New York has been addressing this issue for decades. The school serves 23 local high schools, including one where the Saratoga homeowner, Evan teaches. Evan asked one of his students, Francesco Delgallo, to build some hockey goals for the backyard rink. Kevin O’Connor meets up with Francesco at BOCES to learn more about the program and his decision to explore the trades. Then, Francesco teaches Kevin how to weld. Then they present the new goal to Evan at our project house. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Where to find it? In this video, heating and plumbing expert Richard Trethewey shows host Kevin O’Connor how sink clogs usually form and how a few simple habits can prevent them. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Most sink clogs don’t happen overnight. Instead, they build slowly as grease, soap scum, hair, and debris collect inside the pipes. How to Test for Lead Paint | Ask This Old House

How to Test for Lead Paint | Ask This Old House

In this video, paint expert Mauro Henrique shows host Kevin O’Connor two practical methods for testing lead-based paint so you can keep your home and projects safe. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Lead paint is a common but dangerous substance found in many older homes. When disturbed, it can create dust that leads to brain damage, learning disabilities, and other serious health issues, especially for children and pregnant people. Because of these risks, contractors working on homes built before 1978 must follow EPA lead-safe renovation practices and often start by testing for lead paint. The End of McMansions + Jesse Thorn’s Victorian + Home Theater Secrets

The End of McMansions + Jesse Thorn’s Victorian + Home Theater Secrets

We take a look at what comes after the McMansion, as architecture critic Kate Wagner explains how these oversized suburban status symbols came to define an era and why today’s replacement may be even blander. Then, Bullseye host Jesse Thorn takes us inside his lovingly preserved 1888 Queen Anne in Los Angeles, where original craftsmanship, city noise, and a lived-in sense of history make the house feel truly alive. And Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz shares simple ways to make your living room feel more like a real movie theater, from better sound to fewer distractions. In this episode you’ll learn: * Whether acoustic insulation above a bathroom ceiling can cause moisture problems, and why proper ventilation is the real key. (8:02) * How to deal with a sink cutout that’s too large for a replacement sink without replacing the whole countertop. (14:16) * The best way to remove raised plaster stencil designs from a wall before repainting. (20:59) * What it could mean when an older home’s floors suddenly develop a hump or slope, and when structural movement may be a concern. (26:09) All of this, plus we’re answering your home improvement questions at 877-This Old House Radio Hour! — That’s (877) 864-7460.
