Stop Killing Your Plants + Carl Radke’s Story of Home + Flooring Mistakes to Avoid

Stop Killing Your Plants + Carl Radke’s Story of Home + Flooring Mistakes to Avoid

If your houseplants keep dying, it might not be your fault, it might be your approach. The duo behind Tanner the Planter share simple, practical ways to actually keep your plants alive, from choosing the right plant for your space to knowing when (and when not) to water. Then, Bravo’s Carl Radke takes us back to the small Pittsburgh home that shaped his childhood—filled with both warmth and hardship—and reflects on how that space still defines his idea of home today. Plus, A flooring expert breaks down the real differences between hardwood, laminate, and LVP, and how to decide whether to repair or replace when damage starts to show. In This Episode You’ll Learn: * Whether to use spray foam insulation in a cold, old farmhouse basement (and concerns about future renovations, safety, and off-gassing). * How to handle stone steps and a walkway that have become embedded in a growing tree without damaging it. * The correct step-by-step order for renovating a basement bathroom from scratch. * Diagnosing a mysterious intermittent scratching noise coming from a cold air return vent. All of this, plus we’re answering your home improvement questions at 877-This Old House Radio Hour! — That’s (877) 864-7460.

This Old House | Transformation Complete! (S32 E16) | FULL EPISODE

This Old House | Transformation Complete! (S32 E16) | FULL EPISODE

In the last episode of the Auburndale project, master electrician Allen Gallant finishes up the exterior low-voltage lighting, while inside, lighting designer Susan Arnold shows off the installed lighting plan and how she's made a house with low ceilings look more spacious. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Upstairs, host Kevin O'Connor meets plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey in the kids' bath to see the water-saving plumbing fixtures, and a bath fan that will turn on automatically when it senses humidity in the room. Interior designer Melissa Gulley shows Kevin how a small custom rug factory in Fall River, Massachusetts, is making the carpets for the house using both old- and new-world technology. Out front, landscape contractor Roger Cook shows master carpenter Norm Abram the hops vines that will be planted to grow on the pergola in the spring. Architect Chris Chu is on hand to review the overall effect of the changes to the front of the house and general contractor Tom Silva shows Norm the new composite shutters that add low-maintenance character to the front of the house. Inside, kitchen designer Donna Venegas shows Kevin the finished kitchen and the appliances that she specified, and then kitchen consultant Chris Kimball drops by to give Kevin his final thoughts on the space. Melissa shows Norm the challenges of furnishing an open floor plan on the main level, while upstairs, it is a master bedroom retreat, where homeowner Allison Sharma joins to reveal the master bedroom and luxurious bathroom. Down in the basement, it is all about family and function, as we see the family room, new bath, and laundry with Raveen Sharma and the kids. The entire team celebrates seven months of hard work with the traditional wrap party from our Auburndale project on the banks of Charles River. Enjoying full-episodes of This Old House? LVP to Carpet Transition the RIGHT Way

In this video, I walk you through the right way to install a clean, secure transition strip when your LVP and carpet are sitting at similar heights. You’ll learn how to: Properly prep the doorway, including undercutting the door jamb and trimming carpet and underlay Use shims to dial in the correct height for a flush transition Position the transition strip so it properly engages with the flooring system Secure everything in place for a long-lasting, gap-free finish Install and snap in the transition piece for a clean, professional look This method ensures your transition strip sits tight, lines up perfectly, and allows proper door clearance, without guesswork. This is the method I use on site to make sure the transition sits flush, holds up over time, and allows proper door clearance without any guesswork. If you’re installing vinyl plank flooring next to carpet, this is the step that separates a basic DIY job from a clean, contractor-level result. How to Run Electrical Power to a Shed | Ask This Old House

How to Run Electrical Power to a Shed | Ask This Old House

In this video, Master electrician Heath Eastman helps a homeowner run underground electrical power from his home to his new shed. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Adding power to a shed transforms it from simple storage into a functional workspace. With electricity, you can add lighting, outlets for power tools, and even heating and cooling. But running power to a detached structure involves trenching, underground conduit, grounding, and installing a subpanel. From determining how many volts and amps fit your needs to whether the existing electrical service can provide them to digging a code-compliant trench for conduit, powering an outbuilding is typically best handled by a licensed electrician. Host Kevin O'Connor arrives to find the wood island top being installed, and fabricator Paul Grothouse is on hand to show how he achieved the distressed finish. General contractor Tom Silva installs the "his and hers" closet systems that were designed online by interior designer Melissa Gulley and picked up at the local home center. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Security system specialist Jack Basset installs the new wireless security system that cannot only detect opened windows and broken doors, but also the sound of breaking glass. Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey shows Kevin the high-efficiency two-stage air conditioning system, and an equally efficient system for heat and hot water thanks to a condensing boiler and an indirect hot water tank. Countertop contractor Danny Puccio installs the kitchen window stool his shop made out of marble, as well as the "leathered" granite countertops, a look that's achieved by using metal brushes rather than diamond polishing pads. Tom installs the exterior hardware and shows how the new "smart lock" can be re-keyed anytime without the help of a locksmith. Landscape designer Jenn Nawada Evans oversees the planting of the neighborhood trees in the community island, and the sod going down on the project, which is just about finished. Installing a Slate Fireplace Hearth | This Old House

Installing a Slate Fireplace Hearth | This Old House

A focal point of the new addition will be a gas fireplace, which will be delivered late in the construction schedule as finishes are going in. To jump on things and keep the schedule moving, Jason Whitbeck and Mark McCullough install a slate hearth. It needs to meet code and the fireplace company’s installation specs, so they’ll need to install a special substrate first. How to Landscape a Steep Front Yard | Ask This Old House

How to Landscape a Steep Front Yard | Ask This Old House

In this video, Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada helps a homeowner transform her erosion-prone sloped front yard into a low-maintenance landscape with improved drainage and year-round curb appeal. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. A steep front yard can be difficult to maintain. Grass is hard to mow, soil washes away during heavy rain, and patchy areas quickly become an eyesore. Instead of fighting the slope, Jenn Nawada’s approach focuses on working with it—softening the grade, improving drainage, and using plants that help stabilize the soil. Install Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades | Ask This Old House

Install Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades | Ask This Old House

In this video, Carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps a homeowner block her tiny watchdog’s view outside by installing top-down, bottom-up cellular shades, offering privacy without sacrificing natural light. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Traditional shades force you to choose between privacy and daylight. Top-down, bottom-up shades solve that problem by allowing you to lower the shade from the top, blocking outside views while still letting light in. Once ordered correctly, installation is quick and straightforward. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house?
