He Won the Fight. So Why Did She Choose the Loser? | The Stag Experiment
Get Primal Attraction (Audiobook/Kindle/Paperback): https://www.amazon.com/dp/1036929272 For a long time, biologists believed that if two stags fought each other in the wild, the winner would always get the doe. Surprisingly, researchers discovered that the winning stag didn’t always get the doe. The victorious stag was just as likely to get rejected, and in many cases, the doe chose the loser. This behavior confused biologists who assumed that dominance dictated mating success. That was until researchers discovered the real reason the defeated male could still be more desirable than the victor. First, winning a fight often comes at a cost. The victo-rious stag may exhaust himself, injure himself, or reveal a frantic temperament during battle. The doe watches the stag’s behavior closely. If the winner looks unstable, overly aggressive, or out of control, he is judged as a liability and, therefore, a poor choice for mating. A doe doesn’t choose a stag based on the outcome of the fight. A doe pays close attention to the stag’s behavior before, during, and after the fight. At the same time, the loser sometimes displays more important qualities related to survival. For example, if the loser remains calm, regains his footing, conserves energy, or is able to disengage from the fight without injury, he signals more important traits than pure, wild aggression. He signals intelligence, cunning, and emotional control. Females across many species select mates based on behavior and intelligence, not just brute strength. If a stag retains his composure, his defeat doesn’t diminish him. Similarly, women aren’t attracted to pure, wild aggression. Female attraction is more sophisticated. Throughout history, men have lost many battles yet gone on to win the war. Women understand this, which is why respect is not given lightly. A study in Personal Relationships revealed that respect predicts relationship satisfaction more accurately than love itself.
