On paper, this setup should be a dream: a fast f/2 telephoto zoom, incredible image quality, and the flexibility of using Sony’s best E‑mount glass on Nikon’s latest Z‑mount cameras. In reality… things got messy. As a long‑time Nikon shooter, I want access to lenses like the Sony 50–150 f/2 and the Sigma 300–600. Sony shooters have an insane ecosystem of glass, and I’d love to bring some of that into my Nikon kit. So I took this combo on a full real‑world trip to Japan—street photography, travel, events, YouTube projects, and portrait work (including Patreon shoots)—to see whether this lens + adapter combo could actually replace multiple lenses in my bag. The short version: The lens is fantastic. The Nikon bodies are fantastic. The adapter… is not. Throughout the trip I ran into repeated issues: soft focus, sudden focus shifts, the adapter losing contact mid‑shoot, and inconsistent autofocus performance that made it impossible to trust for mission‑critical work. I cleaned every contact, reset every component, and kept testing across multiple scenarios. The problems kept coming back. This isn’t a knock on Sony or Nikon—these systems were never designed to work together. The real question is whether the Megadap adapter can bridge that gap reliably enough for professional use. After thousands of frames, my honest answer is: not yet. If you’re adapting a quirky lens you absolutely love and have no other option, maybe it’s worth the gamble. But for consistent, dependable performance across 5,000+ possible lens/body combinations, the adapter simply isn’t ready. As much as I’d love to add this lens (and the 300–600) to my Nikon kit, the only reliable way to use them is to shoot them natively on Sony.
