What began as a conflict involving children playing outside escalated into one of the most controversial true crime cases in recent years.
According to investigators, Owens went to Lorincz’s home after an altercation involving her children and Lorincz. As Owens stood outside the house, Lorincz fired a single shot through a locked front door, striking Owens in the chest while her young son stood beside her. Owens later died at the hospital.
Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense, saying she feared for her life as Owens knocked on the door. But investigators and prosecutors argued there was no imminent threat, noting that the door was locked and that Owens had not attempted to enter the home.
The case quickly drew national attention, raising questions about Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law, racial tensions, and the long-running dispute between the two neighbors. Reports revealed that Lorincz had previously called police multiple times about Owens’ children playing nearby and had a history of conflicts with the family.
After days of protests and public scrutiny, Lorincz was arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm. In August 2024, a jury found her guilty, and she was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for the killing.
